Powder-coated, galvanised or Corten — which steel for outdoors?

Outdoor-Sofa in Grün

Three finishes, three characters: what sets them apart and which one suits your garden.

Steel is an excellent material for outdoor use — provided the finish matches the purpose. Three approaches have proven themselves.

Galvanised steel: hot-dip galvanising coats the metal in a layer of zinc that reliably protects it from rust, including edges and welds. The matt silvery look is understated and technical. Galvanising is the foundation for anything meant to stand outside for decades.

Powder coating: colour powder is applied electrostatically to the galvanised body and baked on. The result is a tough, UV-stable finish in practically any RAL shade — the combination of galvanising and powder coating (duplex system) is the standard for high-quality outdoor furniture.

Corten steel: here the rust is intentional — it forms a protective patina in warm brown-orange. Corten looks natural and alive, but needs a spot where rust run-off leaves no marks (gravel rather than light natural stone).

Our recommendation: the duplex system for furniture in your preferred colour, Corten for sculptures and planters with a natural character. We are happy to advise in person.
